Abuse and Trauma are extreme hyper stimulations. This article explores what we do to adapt to such- create a stimulus shield. This stimulus shield is quite helpful under many circumstances. When we wish to return safely to being empathic, giving, receiving, connecting and helpful, we will need to navigate the hardened shield that is and was necessary under certain circumstances. Of course the hardest part is discerning which people and circumstances are safe and trustworthy to lower the shieds or some variation. Then it becomes a conscious effort to gradually, partially or cautiously lower our shields or remove a layer of shields so we can engage at the level of safety that is actually present.
