Some parents are anxiously conscientious and thus overly controlling. Their acts come from loving worry but may not be sound. Some parents are authoritarian and want everyone to bow to their rules and style; these may be egotistical, or narcissistic, or insecure controlling people who reign from their small perspective. There may also be love but it’s harder to ferret out. Some parents are disturbed either by substance abuse, history of abuse, or some serious personality disorder. Their controlling or dominating style may be quite abusive and hard to escape. These are just some thoughts for you to contemplate as you develop who you are away from abusively controlling people.
